Mardi Gras 5K / 10K run and music rocks the Bay
BAY ST. LOUIS, Miss., Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013 — Runners and revelers ran and second-lined through the streets of Bay St. Louis under blue skies for the 3rd annual Mardi Pardi 5k / 10k Run. The race had approximately 400 registrants from as far away as Alaska, California and North Carolina and friends and family to cheer them on.
More than a race, the event was a Mardi Gras weekend party with bands, second line dancing in the streets and plenty of jambalaya, beer and other good local food. Memphis-based Star & Micey played Friday night at the race registration party. New Orleans brass-rockers Jeremy “Mojo” Phipps and Minutehead opened for the Irene Sage Band on Saturday after the run. New Orleans’ own Dancing Man 504 led the second line.
“This is my first 5K run, and it’s going to be so much fun. I love the Mardi Gras theme.” said Erica Swatzyna, from Memphis, Tennessee, who drove down with her friend Amy Bryant, from Jackson, Mississippi.
All events took place at the Mockingbird Cafe in Bay St. Louis, and proceeds from the race benefited Recycle Hancock, a school recycling program sponsored by Live Oak Alliance Mississippi.
“This event supports a very good green cause,” said Bay St. Louis Mayor Les Fillingame, who gave out the awards to the runners. “We’re also glad you’re here to enjoy our beautiful town and great community spirit.”
